Gas Powered Bicycle? Huh?

By Gina Garrison on July 12, 2008

While searching Craigslist for a used bicycle I ran across an ad for a gas powered one.  Isn’t this sort of like an oxymoron?

Even though the advertisement says that it get’s 100-200 miles to the gallon, I wonder about the emissions and pollution.  Is it similar to a lawn mower with a comgas powered engine that creates worse pollution that a car?

If you own one of these gas powered bicycles, we need to hear from you, STAT!

Hi,

I recently built a motorized bicycle from one of these 2 stroke Chinese engine kits found on ebay. ($165 - shipped). I bought a cheap cruiser ($100 - shipped) and its been great. I have been riding for about 10 days now and I haven’t even gone through a gallon of gas yet. I think I have put 100 miles on it so far, and since I have a back road route to work, I have been riding to work. What usually takes me 11-12 minutes in a car (6 mile each way), takes me 17-18 mins on the bike. So I am averaging about 22 mph. Its a blast and the looks from other people is priceless. As far as pollution, they are actually greener then a car because you are only burning 1 gallon of gas every 120-150 miles compared to a car that burns a gallon every 20 miles. If you have any other questions, email me and I will be happy to answer them the best that I can.
